Providing the last project deliverable is not the end of the project. A project manager has to make sure that:

  • All project deliverables, i.e. software, have been implemented and are working properly for the customer
  • The project deliverables, i.e. software, are documented in a way that it is usable for the customer and he/she can work with it, e.g., user manual
  • The project is documented in a detailed and complete way
  • The project deliverables are formally accepted by the customer.

An important part of customer relationship management is to evaluate customers’ satisfaction during the project as well as after the project. A recommended procedure is to provide questionnaires and personally discuss the evaluation results with the customer.

After finishing a project, an essential tool for improving your work for your next project is to evaluate the project team’s performance. A recommended procedure for bigger projects is to:

  • Provide questionnaires to the team members
  • Evaluate the results
  • Personally discussion the evaluation results within the project team
  • Derive a list for actions to improve internal work.

Last but not least: Social events for closing out a project – with customers and providers as well as within the project team – are essential tools for improving personal relations and further work.
