The ifgi-AGILE Initiative for a GIScience Publication Rating

AGILE is supporting ifgi's effort to build a rating scheme for publication outlets in Geographic Information Science. The initiative targets a simple, transparent, community-driven and maintainable guide to quality levels of peer reviewed journals and conference proceedings. The outlets rated need to have a declared focus on Geographic Information Science (including all its naming varieties as well as spatial analysis).

A Delphi survey has now started at http://ifgi.uni-muenster.de/delphi/, to

  1. identify journals and refereed conference proceedings with a declared focus on GIScience (by any name)
  2. rate these outlets into three categories (A, B, and C)
  3. collect information about other publication outlets in which GIScience research is published, but which have their focus outside GIScience.

Any GIScience- or Geoinformatics-related researcher who has a doctorate and has published in at least five different journals with broad international readership can participate. A second Delphi survey in 2013 will map outlets in other fields to our rating. A process for revision and maintenance of the ratings and mappings will also be established. The overall goal is to produce a GIScience journal and conference rating that is solidly founded on community input, endorsed by AGILE and other organizations, and related to publication outlets outside our field.

New International Students

On Monday, April 2, ifgi welcomed its new international students. After an introductory meeting in the morning, where the students were equipped with all necessary information on the institute itself, courses etc., the evening program was intended for socializing and learning some interesting facts about the history of the Muenster area. Everybody met at 6 p.m. at the entrance of Mühlenhof, where a Kiepenkerl was already waiting for us. He guided us through several old buildings, telling stories about Muenster in the 19th century. At the end of the tour, we came together for some drinks and food in an old farmers’ house.

Once again, we would like to welcome everybody at ifgi, wish you a good start and all the best for your studies!
