MSc Thesis Topic: An LOD-Georeferencing tool for historic maps in LIFE

We are looking for a highly motivated Master student who would like to develop a georeferencing tool for historic maps published as linked data. Maps are currently scanned and catalogued in the ULB and the Institute for Comparative Urban History. There is a standard for cataloguing maps in all German libraries ("RAK Karten"). However, most libraries are cataloging just the mandatory metadata fields, and fields for geographical coordinates are seldomly used. In LIFE, georeferencing results should be publishable in the form of linked open data (LOD) in order to allow seemless geographic search and retrieval of maps.

The master thesis should address requirements for such a tool in the library context, discuss and analyse available solutions in the context of LOD, and the development of an easy-to-use georeferencing tool for LIFE.

Linked Data for eScience Services (LIFE) is a two-year project funded by the German Research Foundation, jointly carried out by the Semantic Interoperability Lab (MUSIL) at Institute for Geoinformatics and the University Library at University of Münster. The overall goal of LIFE is to facilitate sharing of research data and thus improve interdisciplinary collaboration in science and education. The approach addresses all kinds of resources, ranging from articles and books through maps to raw data.
