2.1.3 Organization of the academical year

Each academical is divided up into two semesters, winter and summer. Winter term usually goes from mid October to mid February. A so called "period free of lectures" follows during which homeworks might be written, exams might take place or laboratory works might be done. Summer term starts in April and finishes in July. In average a term lasts about 14 weeks.

2.1.4 General description

The "Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster" looks back on a 200 year old tradition. The foundation stone was layed in the year 1780 by the capitular and Franz Wilhelm Freiherr von Fürstenberg. As customary in those days theology, philosophy, law and medicine were the first main pillars of the university.

In Muenster historico-cultural and ideological qualms of the landlords prevented a modernisation of the Prussian educational system. The annexation of the catholic Westphalia by the protestant Prussia after the congress of Vienna 1815 caused the degradation of the university to the status of a philosophico-theological academy. Nevertheless enoumerous new fields of study emerged: languages, natural sciences, law studies and others.

1902 Emperor Wilhelm II. (1859-1941), King of Prussia, bestowed the full university rights upon Muenster. During the Republic of Weimar the democrats were in the minority at the university. Many tutors and students reacted positively to the takeover by the National Socialists. At the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität tutors and students were removed for political and racist reasons. Open protest against the NS regime was rare.

After the war the number of students grew steadily. Nowadays the university of Muenster belongs to the biggest universities in Germany counting 45.000 students and more than 100 courses of studies. It attracts many tutors and students from other European and Non-European countries.

2.1.5 Enrollment

As the dates vary from year to year it is best to get the information via the internet on http://www.uni-muenster.de/Rektorat/Studierendensekretariat/termine.html.

2.2 General information

2.2.1 Health insurance

Make sure to have a valid German health insurance. There are different regulations depending on the country of origin.

Techniker Krankenkasse (TK), Hafenstr. 32 (lt is near Ludgeriplatz) and Domagkstr. 61 (lt is in Mensa II) (Tel. 0251/ 53 00 6-0); http://www.tk-online.de

Allgemeine Ortskrankenkasse (AOK), address mentioned above; http://www.aok.de

Deutsche Angestellten Krankenkasse (DAK), Von-Steuben-Straße 5 (near Hauptbahnhof) (Tel.: 02 51 - 4 88 40); http://www.dak.de

Barmer Ersatzkasse (BEK), Engelstraße 63-65 (near Haptbahnhof) (Tel.: 02 51 - 41 00); http://www.bek.de

The "TK" and "AOK" are the two best health insurance agencies. For the prices please contact the insurance via mail. This insurance basically covers all costs for doctor's visits, medicine, and emergencies. TK is especially helpful, since they have a detailed information booklet concerning the (very complicated) German insurance system in English.

Also ask your German health insurance group for a card that enables you to receive medicine and other benefits free of charge.

If you go to the doctor, take your insurance card with you, which you will have received from your insurance along. It looks like a telephone card and contains your personal health information. The doctor's office needs the card to handle all payment transactions directly with your health insurance agency.

Private insurance companies offer insurance packages (health, accidents), for example

SITE ohG, Bonn, Services for International Travel and Education, Obere Wilhelmstr. 23, 53225 Bonn, Tel. +49 (0)228 400620, http://www.site-info.org. (This is not a recommendation, we have no experience with this company.)

2.2.2 Registring at the Aliens' Affairs Department

First, please obtain a form for registration "Meldung" from the City of Muenster [available from the Information Desk of the City Administration "Bürgeramt" of the City of Muenster - Stadthaus, Klemensstrasse (between Kaufhof and Karstadt); openinghours: see above]. When you have completed the form, your landlord (e.g. the student hostel administration of the Studentenwerk) must confirm the details on the last page. With the completed form and the following additional documents:

  • ID card / passport
  • 2 photos
  • University admission notice
  • proof of health insurance
  • certificate of financial support (amount and duration of fincancing)

You must then go to the Aliens' Affairs Department within the first 10 days of arrival, where you can apply for a residence permit. At the entrance to the Aliens' Affairs Department you must draw a ticket with a number. The number and the counter to which you must proceed will then appear on a digital display.

As this area is too complex to be described in full detail here, we would ask you to contact the Aliens' Affairs Department direct in the case of any questions or problems.
